FG signs MoU on Intellectual Property Commercialisation December 26, 2021 The Federal Government says it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a UK-based Developing Africa Group, to create Africa’s first Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Commercialisation Project in Nigeria. This is contained in a statement by Ibrahim Haruna, Head, Press and Public Relations of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment on Saturday in Abuja. The statement said the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Otunba Richard Adebayo, disclosed this during the signing ceremony held recently in Abuja. It said that the minister was represented at the occasion by the Registrar, Trademarks, Shafiu Adamu-Yauri. Adeniyi was quoted as saying that the MoU would allow the group to use IPR as a means of resolving some of the issues and challenges facing Nigeria as well as create jobs and trade services. # Descriptive Trademarks#

At the bottom of the trademark food chain dangle descriptive trademarks. These directly describe the goods and services, and are generally considered as ineligible for trademarking. The reason is simple. A Candy Coated Apples trademark could be used against competitors offering candy coated apples, greatly limiting the competition. An exception can be granted if the trademark ceased to be associated with a particular product and became associated with the company that produces the product. In effect, it then becomes a suggestive or arbitrary trademark.
